Attackers may conduct active reconnaissance by sending network traffic to gather information that can be used to identify potential targets. This is different from other forms of reconnaissance that do not involve direct interaction. The attackers may use different techniques for active scanning depending on what information they are trying to gather. These scans may also be performed in different ways, such as using features of network protocols like ICMP. The information gathered from these scans may reveal opportunities for further reconnaissance, setting up resources, or gaining initial access.
